We are living in an exciting time: various technologies are simultaneously making giant leaps that will make the world look VERY different 50 years into the future (think 2074). And we are not just talking about all the AI buzz. In this class, we will explore Blockchain/Web3, Space Tech, Synthetic Biology, IoT (Internet of Things) — as well as the latest advancement in AI/Quantum Computing. This course is very beginner-friendly, no pre-requisite or prior knowledge on technology is needed, and perfect for anyone who is curious about our future.
Course Overview
Module 1: Blockchain/Web3 - You probably have heard of cryptocurrency, but what about the technology behind it? Blockchain technology serves not just cryptocurrency — it can transform the world by making the Internet more private as well as more transparent with use cases in elections and commerce. Though AI has taken over the news lately, Blockchain is still going strong. Come to learn about the future backbone of the Internet (Web3).
Module 2: Space Tech - Why did Jeff Bezos leave Amazon? To build Blue Origin to compete with SpaceX! It’s not about two billionaires’ egos (perhaps a little), but because the space race really is ON. Commercial space travel is projected to be a trillion dollar industry — but space technology is already transforming the way we live, for example, by providing alternative forms of internet in regions controlled by dictatorships. Come to learn about its many more use cases and also its danger to humanity, and take a Virtual Reality trip to Space.
Module 3: Synthetic Biology & Cancer - The number of people currently working on Curing Cancer and Cancer Vaccines will blow your mind — and all reports show that this can be achieved within the next 10-15 years. Every year, trillions of dollars are spent on synthetic biology for this purpose. Synthetic biology, of course, has many more applications, such as agricultural growth, protecting the environment, and personalizing medicine for each person’s unique DNA. Come to discover the thrills and the dangers of our future with synthetic biology.
Module 4: Internet of Things (IoT) - What will our world look like with ubiquitous connection? If you thought we were already connected too much to the Internet, this idea might initially displease you. But what if your phone could talk to your stove to make sure it is off when you leave the house, or that the dinner cooks it self with you just giving instructions on your tablet? Come to discover what scientists are working on to connect everyday objects to the Internet so they can speak to each other and make our lives easier.
Module 5: AI + Quantum Computing - We save the best for last! What exactly are AI startups working on? Why has the word quantum computing been brought up so much? How are they related? AI could be good: it helps discover life-saving medicine faster, calls and books appointments for you, and we will show various demos to illustrate this point; or terrible: there are a multitude of ethical concerns that the general public is in the dark about. Come and discover what the brightest minds on earth are all working on right now.
